When children experience the loss of a parent, it can be a start realization that their lives will never again be the same. The feeling of being lost and abandoned can be overwhelming. Kenny Slaught points out that, “The I Have a Friend mentor program allows these young people to share their feelings with someone who has experienced something very similar.” The youth will have a companion for as long as he or she needs one, and the mentee can explore some of the most sensitive feelings in an open and supportive environment with their mentor, who in turn gives support and practical guidance on the hurdles that will come.
