At the beginning of the 20th century, the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture style developed in the US. The style was born out of the former Spanish colonies being turned into American cities. Most often this movement is found in California, and started after an 1925 quake required Santa Barbara to be redesigned. It was created by architect George Washington Smith, who relocated to Montecito and made it known. El Pueblo Viejo’s style reminds of ancient Paris and Rome, and intends to maintain the Spanish influences. Hispanic architecture is inspired by Andalusia in Southern Spain, while in Santa Barbara, it was a mix between the natural environment and the available materials. In the words of Kenny Slaught, the Spanish style of the area is defined by simplicity and an honest use of materials. The buildings of Santa Barbara are reminiscent of the daylight featuring colors like white, yellow, red and orange.
