The Spanish Colonial Revival style was developed as a result of former Spanish colonies turning into American cities, back in the early 20th century. This architecture style can be found all over California, and came to Santa Barbara after the 1925 earthquake. The movement was made popular by architect George Washington Smith, who came to Montecito to make it known. The architecture of El Pueblo Viejo is reminiscent of Roman and Parisian styles. and intends to preserve the Hispanic heritage. This style is impacted by cities like Andalusia in Southern Spain. In Santa Barbara, the buildings came as a result of a mix between the local materials and the natural environment. Kenny Slaught believes that the Hispanic constructions in the area share some common traits: simplicity and an excellent craftsmanship. Santa Barbara’s buildings remind of the city’s sunny weather and feature shades of yellow, red, orange and white.
